Essar Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Limited (EOGEPL), a subsidiary company of Essar Exploration & Production Ltd., Mauritius (EEPLM), was awarded the Raniganj CBM (Coal Bed Methane) block in July 2002. Located in the Burdawan district of West Bengal, India, the block is spread over a 500 sq. km. area in the prolific Damodar Valley Basin with thick Permo-Carboniferous Gondwana coal seams.
The field has been developed with over 340 production wells along with an extensive network of infield pipelines, spread over 300 km, which connect the wells to four gas-gathering stations. EOGEPL is a significant fuel supplier for the region and provides gas feed to many industries.
The facility is capable of handling over 2 MMSCMD of gas which will be progressively increased to 3 MMSCMD to cater to the projected production from the block. The company plans to further develop the block by drilling 200 additional wells by 2023.
In the pursuit of expanding the unconventional hydrocarbon sphere, the company is looking at exploring the Shale gas resource in the Raniganj block. The Shale development will add considerable upside to the asset’s value, which has encouraged the company’s plans for initiating Shale development, shortly.
